About Paul.

My real name is Paul Ovenden. “Mindy” is a stage name I picked up 40 years ago in the entertainment world — back when I started DJing — and it stuck. Most people in the wedding industry have known me as Paul Mindy for so long that switching back would just confuse everyone.

Paul Mindy Photography is the trading name; Paul Ovenden is the legal name. The contract, the insurance, the bank details all sit under Paul Ovenden, sole proprietor. The website, the brand, the day-to-day — that’s Paul Mindy. Same person, same camera, same calm approach.

I’d worked weddings as a DJ for 25 years before I picked up a camera professionally. In that time, I watched hundreds of photographers and videographers do their jobs — some brilliantly, some badly. The brilliant ones had something in common: they understood the day from the inside. They knew what was coming, they were never in the way, and they got moments other people missed because they’d already learned how a wedding actually flows.

The bad ones were always the ones who treated weddings as a series of set-pieces to tick off — ceremony, kiss, group shots, cake — and missed everything in between. I’d see them stage things that should have been candid, miss things that were actually happening, get in the way of moments that mattered.

After enough years of watching, I thought I could do it better. So I trained, learned the craft properly, invested in the kit, and made the switch. That was 15+ years ago. I’ve been photographing weddings ever since — and I think the 25 years before that gave me a head start nobody else gets.

Calm. That’s the word couples use most often. I arrive early, walk the venue, find the light, work out where the ceremony exit will be, where the speeches will land, where to position for first dance. By the time you see me, I’ve already done a lot of thinking.

During prep I’m quiet and observational — getting candid moments without making them feel staged. For the ceremony I’m as discreet as the venue allows. Group shots are efficient (most couples want them done quickly so they can get back to their guests, and that’s exactly what I deliver). Couple portraits during golden hour are usually 15–20 minutes, not an hour.

The rest of the time I’m in the background reading the room. You probably won’t notice me half the time. That’s deliberate.

Probably — if you’re marrying in Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex or Cambridgeshire, the chances are good. I’ve shot at most of the big-name venues across East Anglia: Kimberley Hall, The Oaksmere, The Little Green Barn, Burloes Hall, Hockwold Hall, Vaulty Manor, Stetchworth Park, The Old Rectory Crostwick — and dozens of smaller halls, barns, country houses and coastal venues.

If I haven’t shot at your venue specifically, I research the layout online beforehand and arrive early to walk the spaces. Most venues follow a similar template — the variable is light, and finding the best light is something you get good at after 15+ years.

Documentary-cinematic. Two words, one idea: I photograph the day as it unfolds (documentary), with a cinematic finish on the colour and the edit (cinematic). The aim is that 20 years from now, you don’t just have nice pictures — you have an honest record of what the day actually felt like.

What I don’t do: forced posing, awkward direction, posed family shots that take 90 minutes, “hold the pose, smile, move six inches to the left”. The work I’m proudest of always comes from getting out of the way.

Honest answer: I’m not for everyone. If you want highly stylised, heavily filtered, posed-throughout wedding photography — the kind that looks great on Instagram but feels less true on a wall years later — you’d be happier with someone else.

The couples who choose me tend to want three things:

• A calm presence on the day — not a photographer who turns the wedding into a photoshoot
• Real moments captured properly — not a curated highlight reel of staged scenes
• One person who can do photo and video well — not two suppliers with different visions
