Ellie & Knight — A Waterside Wedding at The Boathouse, Ormesby Broad

25 July 2026 · Photography & Film · by Paul Mindy Photography

Some venues give you a beautiful backdrop. The Boathouse gives you a whole broad of open water — and on a bright, sun-drenched July day, Ellie & Knight used every inch of it, from a boat arrival across Ormesby Broad to portraits out on the water after the vows.

Quick answer

The Boathouse is a waterside wedding venue set in 11 acres of parkland on the banks of Ormesby Broad, at Eels Foot Road, Ormesby St Michael, near Great Yarmouth, Norfolk (NR29 3LP). Ellie & Knight’s summer wedding here was covered end to end with photography and film by Paul Mindy Photography — a boat arrival on the Broad, a sunny waterside ceremony with a live singer, portraits out on the water, and first dances into the evening.

Arriving by boat across the Broad

The thing that sets The Boathouse apart is right there in the name. The venue sits directly on Ormesby Broad, part of the Trinity Broads, so the bride can make her entrance the way almost nowhere else in Norfolk allows — by boat, across open water.

To catch it properly I went ahead of the wedding party, taking a boat downriver to get into position on the water before Ellie set off. That meant I could photograph her sailing up the Broad towards the venue rather than shooting it from the bank — the arrival framed against the reed beds and the wide Broadland sky, with the guests waiting on the terrace. It’s a genuinely different kind of first look, and the flat calm water and July sun made it glow.

A sun-drenched waterside ceremony

The weather could not have been kinder — clear skies and warm sun the whole way through. The ceremony took full advantage of the venue’s glass-fronted, water-facing rooms and terrace, with the Broad shining behind everything.

A lovely touch on the day was the live singer, @pxige_richards, who performed as Ellie & Knight entered and again as they exited — music bookending the ceremony and giving the coverage, both stills and film, some of its best emotional beats.

Portraits out on the water

Once they were married, we didn’t just stay on dry land. I took Ellie & Knight back out on the boat, heading down the river for a set of couple portraits with the water and the Broadland scenery all around them. Being afloat changes everything — the light, the horizon, the sense of space — and it gave them a gallery of images that are unmistakably The Boathouse and unmistakably theirs.

It’s also a relaxed way to shoot. Away from the crowd for twenty minutes, on the water, it’s just the two of them — which is exactly when the most natural pictures happen.

First dances into the evening

Back at the venue the celebration moved indoors and into the evening. Two moments anchored the reception coverage: the father–daughter dance, quiet and full of feeling, and then Ellie & Knight’s first dance as a married couple. Both are in the gallery and both are in the film.

Calm coverage, no stress

The feedback that means the most came at the end of the day: Ellie & Knight thanked me for being relaxed and helpful throughout, and for making the day feel completely stress-free. That’s the whole approach in one sentence — documentary-cinematic coverage that stays out of the way, keeps the day flowing, and lets a couple actually enjoy their wedding rather than manage their photographer.

The Boathouse Ormesby — Wedding FAQs

Where is The Boathouse wedding venue?

The Boathouse is a waterside wedding venue set in 11 acres of parkland on the banks of Ormesby Broad, at Eels Foot Road, Ormesby St Michael, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk NR29 3LP. It sits on the Trinity Broads, about six miles from Great Yarmouth and within easy reach of Norwich.

Can the bride arrive by boat?

Yes — that’s one of the venue’s signature moments. Because it sits directly on Ormesby Broad, couples can arrive by boat across the water. For Ellie & Knight I travelled downriver ahead of the bride to get into position on the water, then photographed her sailing up the Broad to the venue — an entrance only a waterside venue like this can offer.

Can we book photography and film together?

Absolutely — Ellie & Knight’s day was covered with both. One supplier across stills and film means a consistent documentary-cinematic style, better value than two separate teams, and a calmer day. See the photo + video packages for what’s included, or photography-only packages if you just want stills.

What areas do you cover near Great Yarmouth?

Based in Thetford, I photograph and film weddings right across Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire — including Great Yarmouth, the Norfolk Broads, Norwich and the Norfolk coast — with UK-wide travel on request.

How do we check availability?

Use the contact form with your date and venue and you’ll get a reply within 24 hours. A simple agreement and retainer secure the date. Summer Saturdays at Broadland venues book well ahead, so it’s worth asking early.

What happens to photography plans if a boat arrival changes?

We plan around the arrangements confirmed by the venue and agree an alternative if the arrival or outdoor ceremony changes. Photography can follow the revised timings and locations; access on the water and the boat arrangements themselves must be confirmed with the venue.

Planning photographs around a Boathouse boat arrival.

Ellie and Knight’s arrival was a distinctive part of their wedding story. If you are planning an arrival on the water, confirm the arrangements, timings and weather alternative directly with the venue. Share that plan early so photography positions and the transition into the ceremony can be coordinated.
