CAMBRIDGE · CITY AND COUNTRYSIDE
Wedding venues in and around Cambridge
Celebrate in the historic city, choose a country house outside Cambridge, or explore the surrounding countryside for barns and private estates. These settings create different wedding days, so start with the experience you want before comparing the buildings.
For a garden-and-marquee option on Madingley Road, our Rectory Farm photography guide considers how to plan coverage around the booked spaces at Rectory Farm.

A useful shortlist, not the longest list
This guide compares seven settings relevant to a Cambridge-area search. Only University Arms is a central Cambridge example; the other venues have their own village or countryside locations. Use the full addresses when planning preparations, guest transport and the reception.
From a photography perspective, natural light, wet-weather rooms and how the spaces connect matter as much as an impressive entrance. Explore my Cambridge wedding photography, browse the photography packages, or discuss your shortlist.
Seven settings worth investigating
University Arms · central Cambridge
University Arms is on Regent Street. Its Ballroom overlooks Parker’s Piece, while the Watson arrangement offers a different option for a smaller celebration. It is a city-hotel choice rather than a private countryside estate.
Photography perspective: the interiors and architecture can give the day a clear city identity. Decide whether a short outdoor portrait session adds something important before adding extra travel. Nearby public spaces are not privately reserved by a hotel wedding booking.
Madingley Hall and Gardens · Madingley
Madingley Hall offers a historic house-and-gardens setting outside Cambridge. Its official wedding information describes civil ceremonies in the walled garden or inside rooms including the Saloon, Hickson and Stuart.
Photography perspective: indoor rooms and gardens give genuine alternatives when the weather changes. Choose a room that suits your guest list and check the route from the ceremony to the reception. A short portrait session in an agreed part of the grounds can leave more time with guests.
Childerley Long Barn · west of Cambridge
Childerley’s nineteenth-century timber-framed Long Barn provides separate ceremony and reception areas. The operator offers exclusive event hire and access the day before for setup.
The adjoining courtyard and the historic Hall gardens are not interchangeable inclusions: the gardens are offered as an additional hire option for reception drinks and photographs. The venue states there is no on-site accommodation.
Photography perspective: the barn and courtyard can keep the celebration together. Confirm any garden access before using it in your portrait plan, and organise transport to nearby accommodation rather than assuming guests can stay on site.
Longstowe Hall · Longstowe
Longstowe Hall is a country-estate option west of Cambridge, with formal gardens and a lake. Its wedding offering includes an indoor Rose Ball Room ceremony or a lakeside pavilion setting, followed by reception spaces and a wedding marquee.
Photography perspective: water, gardens and architecture give different backgrounds as the light changes. Walk the actual route between the spaces in your booking and choose the most useful portrait stops rather than trying to use the entire estate.
Swynford Manor · Six Mile Bottom
Swynford Manor combines distinctive country-house interiors with gardens, indoor and outdoor ceremony options and accommodation. Its Six Mile Bottom location is outside Cambridge city.
Photography perspective: having preparations, ceremony and reception at the same venue can reduce travel. Check when preparation rooms become available and how the celebration moves between rooms so the timetable reflects the access actually included.
South Farm · near Royston
South Farm sits near the Cambridgeshire–Hertfordshire border at Shingay-cum-Wendy. Its exclusive-use setting combines restored barns, gardens and a choice of indoor ceremony spaces alongside the outdoor Summerhouse.
Photography perspective: the different spaces give the gallery variety through the day. A garden reception can contrast with the timber interiors later on. Confirm the ceremony arrangements for your season and judge the indoor alternative just as carefully.
The Old Hall Ely · near Ely
The Old Hall is a separate northern Cambridgeshire option, not a venue in Cambridge itself. The Jacobean house overlooks ornamental lakes and views towards Ely Cathedral, with indoor and outdoor wedding spaces and accommodation.
Photography perspective: the landscape offers varied portraits, while the Orangery gives a light-filled indoor alternative. Compare your guest journey and overnight requirements with a city venue rather than assuming the two settings are equally convenient.
What about a Cambridge college wedding?
A particular college or historic institution may be important to your story. Enquire directly about the type of celebration you propose, the rooms available, eligibility, ceremony arrangements and photographic access. Do not assume every college offers the same wedding service or that access to a courtyard includes surrounding buildings.
For a ceremony followed by a separate meal, record both entrances and leave room in the schedule for congratulations, essential groups and the journey. A location that works for a short portrait visit is not necessarily available for a full reception.
City wedding or countryside celebration?
Neither is automatically better. A central hotel gives architecture and a city atmosphere; a country house brings interiors and gardens; a barn offers a different scale and reception layout. Accommodation can be useful for travelling guests, but verify room numbers and booking terms separately from the event capacity.
For exclusive-use venues, establish what is private and for how long. A private function room is not necessarily a private hotel, and estate hire does not automatically include every garden or building.
What I check as a photographer and videographer
During a viewing, ask how the building works with your guests and furniture in place.
- Preparation-room access and useful window light.
- The indoor ceremony and drinks-reception alternative.
- Walking routes between the main spaces.
- Confetti permissions and a practical family-photo location.
- A short portrait route that keeps you close to guests.
- Speech positions, sight lines and microphone arrangements.
- The first-dance layout and evening lighting.
- Parking, unloading and supplier access.
- Any restrictions affecting filming, drone use or planned activities.
These details help keep the photography part of the wedding rather than something that repeatedly interrupts it.
Planning photography and film
My approach is documentary-led and cinematic. Most of the day is captured naturally, with efficient family groups and short portraits fitted around the celebration. Professional microphones preserve vows and speeches for the film.
Drone footage depends on the venue, airspace, permission, weather and safe conditions. Discuss 360 coverage and other options individually rather than assuming every venue or package includes them. Share the shortlist and preparation addresses before choosing coverage.
Nearby places to explore
For a wider search, compare Ely, Newmarket, Royston and Huntingdon. The Cambridgeshire county guide explains further house and barn options, including border locations.
Cambridge wedding venue questions
Are all these venues in Cambridge city centre?
No. University Arms is the central city example. Madingley, Childerley, Longstowe, Swynford Manor, South Farm and The Old Hall Ely are separate options outside the city.
How early should we contact venues?
Once your likely guest numbers and preferred season are clear, ask the shortlist about current availability. There is no single booking lead time that applies to every venue or date.
Can we have an outdoor ceremony near Cambridge?
Several venues in the shortlist advertise outdoor ceremony options. Confirm the current arrangements for your date and inspect the indoor alternative with the same care.
Does Childerley have on-site accommodation?
The venue’s published hire information states that there is no on-site accommodation. Arrange nearby stays and transport separately, and confirm any garden hire you need.
Can you provide photography and videography together?
Yes. Paul Mindy Photography provides photography, videography and combined photo-and-film coverage, planned around the same wedding-day story.
Can you use a drone at a Cambridge wedding venue?
Potentially. It depends on the individual venue, local airspace, permissions, weather, nearby people and safe operating conditions on the day.
