Laura & Steve — Married at Gretna Green, Celebrated at The Norfolk Terrier, Thetford

Laura & Steve did the legal bit their own way — just the two of them at Gretna Green, a few weeks before. Then they came home to Thetford and threw the party at their local, with everyone who mattered in one room and nobody watching the clock.

Gretna Green first, Thetford second

More couples are splitting their wedding in two, and Laura & Steve are a good example of why it works. Gretna Green gave them the marriage itself with no audience, no logistics and no seating plan. Thetford gave them the celebration — family, friends, a proper bar and an evening that ran as long as people wanted it to.

From behind a camera the second day is often the better one to shoot. Nobody is nervous about vows. Nobody is watching a registrar’s schedule. Laura had already been married for weeks, so when she walked into that pub in her dress she was purely enjoying it, and that reads in every frame.

Portraits by the river

The image at the top of this page is Laura & Steve by the water, under the canopy. That soft green light is what late summer does on the Little Ouse when the sun filters through mature trees instead of hammering straight down — open shade, no squinting, no hard shadows across anybody’s face.

We were gone about twenty minutes. That is usually all it takes. They are clearly comfortable with each other, so most of my job was finding decent light, having a chat and staying out of the way. The laughing in that frame is not something I set up.

Thetford is my home town and I have walked those riverbanks for years, which matters more at a pub wedding than at a country estate. A big venue hands you a curated set of backdrops. Here you have to know where they are.

Back at the pub

The best thing about celebrating at your local is that nobody is on their best behaviour. No receiving line, no hovering event manager, no seating plan politics. People get a drink, find their friends and settle in — which from behind a camera is a gift, because everything you photograph is actually happening rather than being arranged for you.

Speeches, food, then the room filling out as the evening guests arrived. I shoot this part on fast primes and available light where I can, with a little off-camera flash bounced into the ceiling once it goes dark, so the room keeps the mood it actually had.

Photography and film, one supplier

Laura & Steve had both stills and a wedding film. In a smaller venue that choice matters more than it does in a mansion, because space is finite. Two suppliers means two people working the same room, two sets of lights and two cameras in your face during the speeches. One person covering both means the day breathes.

It also means the photographs and the film look like they came from the same wedding, because they did — same framing instincts, same grade, same read on when to move in and when to leave people alone.

Emily & James — A Parkland Wedding at Royal Norwich Golf Club

Royal Norwich is not the golf club people picture when you say golf club wedding. It sits in 350 acres of estate parkland with long views, old treelines and a clubhouse built for entertaining — and Emily & James used all of it, starting with a Rolls-Royce pulling up to the door.

The Rolls-Royce arrival

The car does a lot of work at a venue like this. Royal Norwich has a long approach through the estate, so a Rolls-Royce arriving is a proper moment rather than a quick hop from the car park to the door. Emily stepped out to a clear run of parkland behind her, which is the sort of frame you get once and cannot restage later.

Because I was covering both stills and film, that arrival went into two places at once: the photographs of Emily and her dad in the doorway of the car, and the opening sequence of the wedding film. No second team, no two sets of instructions, no waiting while another supplier resets. One pass, both deliverables.

The ceremony

Royal Norwich is licensed for civil ceremonies and the rooms are built around the parkland view, so the light indoors is soft and even rather than the harsh mix you get in a lot of function spaces. That matters more than it sounds. Good ambient light means I can shoot quietly from the back and the sides on longer lenses instead of moving around at the front of the room during vows.

Film-wise it means the same thing: locked-off wide, a second angle on the couple, and radio mic audio on James and the registrar, all of it recorded without anybody noticing there is a videographer in the room.

Drinks, confetti and the terrace

After the ceremony everything opened out onto the estate. Drinks and canapés outside, guests spreading across the lawns, and the kind of unposed half-hour that ends up carrying most of a gallery. I work this part of the day almost entirely hands-off — group shots get done quickly and by name from a list agreed beforehand, and the rest of the time I am just following what is actually happening.

Portraits across the estate

With 350 acres to play with, the portraits were the easy part. We stayed off the active fairways and worked the edges instead: treelines, open ground near the clubhouse, and the long light that comes down across the parkland late in the day. Twenty minutes, no big production, mostly walking and talking.

That footage doubles as the slow-motion spine of the film, which is another quiet advantage of hybrid coverage — you are not doing your couple portraits twice for two different suppliers on a day you would rather be spending with your guests.

Evening in The Stables

Speeches, dinner and then the party. The first dance closed out the day and the film, with the room lighting doing most of the mood and a little off-camera light from me to keep faces clean without turning the dance floor into a photo studio.

Pauline and Holly chose to marry outdoors, in front of the fountain by the lakeside gazebo, with their celebrant standing at the summer house and their guests gathered close on the lawn. Inside, the celebration was run beautifully — a toastmaster keeping the evening flowing, food that everyone was still talking about, and a disco that filled the floor as the light went down. I stay on into the party, because some of the warmest footage comes once everyone’s forgotten there’s a camera in the room.

Ellie & Knight — A Waterside Wedding at The Boathouse, Ormesby Broad

Some venues give you a beautiful backdrop. The Boathouse gives you a whole broad of open water — and on a bright, sun-drenched July day, Ellie & Knight used every inch of it, from a boat arrival across Ormesby Broad to portraits out on the water after the vows.

Arriving by boat across the Broad

The thing that sets The Boathouse apart is right there in the name. The venue sits directly on Ormesby Broad, part of the Trinity Broads, so the bride can make her entrance the way almost nowhere else in Norfolk allows — by boat, across open water.

To catch it properly I went ahead of the wedding party, taking a boat downriver to get into position on the water before Ellie set off. That meant I could photograph her sailing up the Broad towards the venue rather than shooting it from the bank — the arrival framed against the reed beds and the wide Broadland sky, with the guests waiting on the terrace. It’s a genuinely different kind of first look, and the flat calm water and July sun made it glow.

A sun-drenched waterside ceremony

The weather could not have been kinder — clear skies and warm sun the whole way through. The ceremony took full advantage of the venue’s glass-fronted, water-facing rooms and terrace, with the Broad shining behind everything.

A lovely touch on the day was the live singer, @pxige_richards, who performed as Ellie & Knight entered and again as they exited — music bookending the ceremony and giving the coverage, both stills and film, some of its best emotional beats.

Portraits out on the water

Once they were married, we didn’t just stay on dry land. I took Ellie & Knight back out on the boat, heading down the river for a set of couple portraits with the water and the Broadland scenery all around them. Being afloat changes everything — the light, the horizon, the sense of space — and it gave them a gallery of images that are unmistakably The Boathouse and unmistakably theirs.

It’s also a relaxed way to shoot. Away from the crowd for twenty minutes, on the water, it’s just the two of them — which is exactly when the most natural pictures happen.

First dances into the evening

Back at the venue the celebration moved indoors and into the evening. Two moments anchored the reception coverage: the father–daughter dance, quiet and full of feeling, and then Ellie & Knight’s first dance as a married couple. Both are in the gallery and both are in the film.

Filming the ceremony

A ceremony is the one part of the day that only happens once, with no second take — so filming it well is mostly about staying invisible. I work with long lenses from the sides and back, keeping movement minimal so nobody’s aware of the camera during vows. Audio is captured discreetly at the same time, which is what turns a nice-looking clip into a film you feel: the vows in their own voices, the pause before “I do”, the quiet laugh that ripples through the room.

At Park Farm the ceremony space carries natural light well, so the footage keeps a soft, true colour without anything intrusive. That same light is what makes the extracted stills hold up — the frames pulled from the vows look like photographs, not screenshots.

The confetti tunnel

The confetti tunnel was the standout moment of the coverage, and it’s one that rewards a little planning. The best version isn’t a frantic dash — it’s a slow walk, guests packed close on both sides, biodegradable confetti thrown high so it drifts down through the frame. The couple pausing halfway gives the film room to breathe and the camera time to catch the reactions on either side.

Shot that way, a confetti tunnel delivers on both fronts at once: a joyful, movement-filled sequence in the film, and a run of frames that make some of the strongest still images of the whole day — confetti suspended mid-air, real laughter, no posing required.
